Sinopsis

The word syndesis, from its Classical Greek Roots (σύνδεσις), implies a binding together, a conjunction, from συν (with, together) and δέω (I bind, tie). The concept of syndesis offers us a common denominator for the outcome —and an indication perhaps, of the creative processes— which characterize buildings, places and landscapes such as the "Ceremonial Path among Rocks, Sun, Wind, and Words" of Punta Pite by architect Teresa Moller and associates. At Punta Pite, on the pacific coast of Chile, Castro finds architectural syndesis and thaumaturgy (the marvelous). An analogous syndetic experience occurs in Mellin's encounter with the domestic existential space of architect Albert Frey's own house in Palm Springs California; a domestic environment in close interaction with the things amongst which its dweller inhabits, the elements of its immediate topography and a fine articulation with the remote landscape. In the conclusive article of this volume Carlos Rueda narrates the experiential tale of a visit to the Graduate Studies Pavilion at UNAL in Bogota, by architect Rogelio Salmona. There, in subtle and refined syndesis, Salmona seems to have poetically bound together diverse, very pertinent, Baroque resonances as distant in time and geography as Oscar Niemeyer's Casino at Pampulha (Brazil, 1942) may be from the imaginary "Prisons" of G. B. Piranesi (Rome, circa 1760).
